Adult Vaccines & Immunisations

At Donacarney Medical Centre, we provide a range of vaccines to help protect against various illnesses and infections. To receive a vaccination, please contact reception to book an appointment with our nurse.

Flu Vaccine

Flu, or influenza, is a highly contagious illness spread through droplets from coughs and sneezes. While most people recover within a week, the flu can be unpleasant and sometimes lead to complications. Flu vaccines are designed to protect against flu, but effectiveness may vary, and new vaccines are developed each year to match changing flu strains. Annual vaccination is recommended for those at risk.

At-Risk Groups

The flu vaccine is especially important for those in at-risk groups who are more likely to face severe complications if they contract the flu. These groups include:
  • People aged 65 and over
  • Pregnant women
  • Individuals with long-term medical conditions (e.g., diabetes, cardiovascular disease, liver or kidney disease, cancer, chronic lung conditions including COPD and asthma, neurological disorders)
  • People with weakened immune systems due to disease or treatment, including cancer patients
  • Individuals with a BMI over 40
  • Those with Down syndrome
  • Residents of nursing homes and other long-stay institutions
  • Healthcare workers
  • Carers and household contacts of people at medical risk of flu complications (specific criteria apply)
You should not receive the flu vaccine if you have had a severe allergic reaction to a previous dose or any part of the vaccine, or if you are taking certain medicines. If you have an acute illness with a temperature over 38°C, your vaccination should be rescheduled.

Pneumococcal Vaccine

Pneumococcal disease can cause severe health issues, particularly among the very young and the elderly. The pneumococcal vaccine is recommended for:
  • Everyone aged 65 and over
  • Individuals aged 2 and over with specific conditions such as diabetes, chronic lung, heart, liver, or kidney disease, chronic neurological disease, coeliac disease, Down syndrome, cochlear implants, immune deficiencies (including cancer patients), HIV infection, absent or non-functioning spleen, CSF leaks, or intracranial shunts

The vaccine is not generally recommended for healthy children and adults who are at low risk of pneumococcal disease.
